Shana Ekedal is a holistic nutrition expert and transformation coach who promotes mind, body, and spirit wellness. Ever since she was a child, she always felt like she wasn’t “normal” and did all she could to fit in. This eventually led to an unhealthy relationship with food, using it as an escape from reality. In her teens, this unhealthy relationship made her conscious about what she looked like from the outside, so she took weight-loss pills, over-exercised, and just did what it took to look good.

After developing cancer and not receiving answers to her questions by the medical professionals, she decided to study nutrition and alternative forms of healing. She healed herself from the inside and is now focused on helping other people the way she helped herself.

Today, Shana talks about her way of healing, the importance of being one with your mind and spirit, as well as why she thinks alternative healing will eventually become more mainstream in the future.

SHANA:
Thank you. I’m so happy to be here.

DAN:
So coming out with a book?

SHANA:
Yes, we are just finishing up a book, and it’s really exciting. It’s kind of the whole enchilada, so to speak, of what I do and my method. And sometimes it takes a little bit of people understanding it and hearing it and kind of integrating it, which is why it’s so fun to be on your show and talk about it, so people can really get a sense of what it is.

DAN:
Yeah, that’s awesome. And we’ll get back to your book here in a little bit. And I want to talk about the online event. But go back in time and tell us about your upbringing and what brought you to where you are today.

Shana’s Background

SHANA:
Absolutely. So my interest – I say my relationship with food for most of my life wasn’t great, and I really had no plan that I would end up where I am today, like many of us. We don’t know what our path is ahead of us. But it came from a really natural place. It came from some of my own struggles with health and wellness, and it really started very early in my life. I was actually – when I was born I was actually very sensitive to people and to people’s feelings and to energy and to a lot of stuff, and I realized – we kind of think when we’re young that we’re like everybody else, and by the age of five or six I realized I wasn’t, that I really saw and experienced things that other people weren’t experiencing. And for me that was scary, and I kind of developed this idea and praised this idea of being normal. I just wanted to experience life the way other people were experiencing life. And by the time I was about six years old I just really shut down. These other aspects of myself, the sensitivity that I had as a child, and really just tried to look around me and say what’s normal, and what’s everybody else doing, and how can I follow along? And so sometimes in everybody’s journey we disown little parts of ourselves. Maybe our parents don’t think those parts are the greatest, or we don’t receive praise for them, and so we kind of disconnect from that, which is more common than not in people’s life experience, whether they’re aware of that.

And that was my journey, and by the time I was 10 years old my parents went through a really painful divorce, and I just really started eating. It was my way of coping with it. Of course at 10 years old you don’t realize you’re turning to food for emotional reasons, but that’s was exactly what I was doing. And between fifth and sixth grade I gained 20 pounds, and if you could see me, I’m 5’ 1 ½”, and so I was very small back then. And so it was noticeable, and it kind of set up this really unhealthy relationship with food, and like so many people, as I went into my teen years and 20s, and especially for women, I just really wanted to look a certain way on the outside. And so this obsession with food and my unhealthy relationship with it, things like I would eat a lot and then I wouldn’t eat the next day. I would over exercise. I took every diet pill that came on the market. It just was this constant like trying to stay a certain size, but with this insatiable desire and craving to eat and overeat. And it was frustrating for me, and I really didn’t understand nutrition or health or anything like that. I just wanted to look a certain way, and it was bothersome that I would have these deep cravings that led me down roads I didn’t want to go down.

And after years of struggling with that I really got in some bad places. I was overweight. I was not taking great care of myself. I mean we really don’t receive some manual when we’re born that tells us how to take care of our body. We learn or don’t learn from the people that raise us, and so I was just kind of lost about how to take care of myself. And certainly as we start to get older it becomes more and more important, and that’s some of the struggle that I was going through. And meanwhile my pursuit of being a normal person and whatever this idea of normal is, I was in the real estate industry. I had built a very big career in that industry. I had this idea that I was going to make great money, and I was going to do a job well and meet Prince Charming and ride off into the sunset and have children, and life would just be roses from that day forward. And somehow I think a lot of times we think we’re going to hit fulfillment at a certain point, or we’re going to be really happy when we get this or when we do that. And so I was in pursuit of that.

So I was, when I make X number of dollars, when I buy my house, when I do this, then I will feel fulfilled, and then I will feel happy. And so all of those things happened in my life, and I got a lot of praise at my work, and yet I had this deep inner sense of like I’m not fulfilled. I’m not really – this is not making me happy. And it was very confusing because from the outside my life looked great. But why wasn’t I feeling that on the inside? And so meanwhile, decades of struggling with food, decades of trying to fix the outside, there was all this trying to have the outside look a certain way, trying to fix the outside when the inside was a mess. Nothing great going on there. And I finally hit a point where we all have these different wake-up calls, and mine was that I was diagnosed with skin cancer on the bridge of my nose, and it was – it just floored me. It just took me aback. I couldn’t believe it. And I knew in that moment that this was a wake-up call because it wasn’t on my ankle. It was on my face. And this is how we show up in the world. And I felt really like I was being told like hey, you’re not listening. You’re not sleeping well. You’re not taking care of yourself. You keep running towards these ideas of what’s going to be fulfillment, and yet you’re not really finding it.

And from that journey I just got no answers. I kept going to doctors and saying why did this happen? I’m so young. Every doctor was telling me you’re so young to have this happen. And why is this happening? Why am I getting sick all the time? And can you help me? And none of the doctors I went to really gave me any great information. You know a lot of them aren’t trained in nutrition. It was just kind of like well, we don’t know why it happened, and that answer didn’t sit well with me. And so I just really started to research nutrition and understanding the body. And what I found on that journey was that when we start to heal our body and put good foods in our body we start to really change the energy of our life. We start to even think differently and see the world differently and kind of come alive in certain ways. And through that process I realized that healing isn’t just about the body. It’s that we’re all connected. Our emotions are connected to that. The way we think, our negative mindsets are connected to that. The fears that stop us in life are connected to that.

And I started to see this really holistic view of healing through my own healing journey that I went on, and I didn’t know it at the time that I was really creating a method. And after I was able to heal my own body, and lose weight, and feel better, and have more energy, and I started to feel really passionate and feel that sense of fulfillment and purpose that I hadn’t felt ever really in my professional career. And it was exciting. And the negative things I thought about before weren’t there because I was so excited about life. And so I started helping people in my own circle, in my own sphere. They were getting amazing results fast, like the stuff I was teaching people wasn’t this idea that it’s going to take forever. People were really seeing remarkable changes in their life really quickly, and so I got to a certain point where I said this is my purpose, and I found it in a really natural way, by really my own need and then learning and growing from there. And then certainly I educated myself in all these different areas and began helping people. So a lot of what I teach people is I say lessons and things that have come across my path from my entire lifetime. And there is no better feeling than to be with somebody who really gets it, who’s really been there, who has not been well in her life and who understands all these different components and can speak to all of them.

DAN:
How long did it take you to develop your approach because I would guess that as you were learning and acquiring knowledge it was incremental. So were you trying different things and seeing how they worked, or how did that work with you? And then how long did it take you to put the whole method together?

SHANA:
Yes, I like to say I was a human guinea pig because – really, because I tried all kinds of different things and spent a lot of money, truthfully, in trying all kinds of stuff. And some stuff just didn’t work. There are certainly approaches – or it didn’t work for me. I’m not going to say it doesn’t work for somebody else, but I almost had this call. It took me about, I’d say 5 to 7 years of exploring these different things, and I felt like when I got to the end of that time I was like, wow, I could really help people in a very succinct way in way less time than this because now, you know what I mean, I’ve done it all, and I’ve seen what worked, and I saw how these different pieces of healing fit together. And I could make it real easy for other people. And it’s funny because when you go through an experience like that you just feel really called to pass along the good stuff to other people. You go oh gosh, let me show you the easy way because I kind of went through the harder way, and let me give you the Cliff Notes on how to do this.

DAN:
Yeah, that saves people a lot of time. I’m curious, what are some of the more obscure things that you tried that didn’t work?

SHANA:
Oh gosh, I don’t want to say what didn’t work because honestly – because I really believe that – and I teach this, too – I really believe that certain things work for certain people, and when it comes to following a certain food regimen or a certain eating plan, I really teach people to tune into their own wisdom with that because if I just follow what you eat because you tell me to eat that, that’s not necessarily right for my body. I mean we’re all bioindividual, and we have certain things that – I have certain things that feel good in my body that might not feel good in your body. And so really I believe that we have our own answers to some degree if we can access them. And so what I like to do is make my tool chest available to people, and we try different things that fit into their life, that feel comfortable for them, that feel like an extension of who they are because so often we see people following things that they would never be able to maintain for the long-term, you know, food plans or diets or things like that. And I like to say we need to bring healthy to your life, meaning – like I’ll give you an example. I have a lot of clients that are CEOs and high-level executives, and they might travel a lot for business, or they’ll do business lunches every day, so clearly if there was an eating plan that said you need to eat homemade food for all three meals a day for 30 days, that just wouldn’t be possible for those people. Like that doesn’t fit into their lifestyle. So instead I will go, okay, where are you going to lunch? Here’s the best three restaurants. Here’s what on the menu is going to be the best three choices. That to them is empowering. Then they know they can go to that restaurant, feel great because they know the menu, feel great that they know what to order that’s going to be the best for their body. So it’s really individualized. What is right for one person is not right for the other. And so these different healing modalities, I feel like you know we want to find the ones that are right for you.

So some of the things – I did everything from acupuncture, which I think is a great healing modality, various energy healing, which part of what I do is energy healing now, so various different aspects of that I did, which was really helpful. Some of those are very helpful, too, for emotional release and emotional healing. It’s actually been studied. If you’ve ever heard of the field of quantum physics, it’s actually been studied that the emotional self, that the things that we experience emotionally, that physical ailments and physical disease starts in the energetic, in your energetic realm, in the emotional self before it actually manifests in the physical. And so there’s a lot of really amazing ground you can cover in healing maybe some of the past hurts or fears or pain that people have gone through in their life. So a lot of that is very, very effective. I did everything from like color therapy to light therapy. I mean there are so many neat alternative therapies out there that really help the body heal at not only a cellular level, but an energetic level.

DAN:
Talk a little bit more about the energy healing because I don’t know if the listeners understand what that is exactly. And then just touch on color and light. I have a lightbox sitting here on my desk, so I understand the importance of light. But just talk through those three real quick. Kind of explain what they are.

Energy Healing Explained

SHANA:
Yeah, so energy healing is a broad term, meaning if you’ve heard of something called Reiki, that’s a kind of energy healing, which is more bodywork where you lay on a table, like similar to massage, and basically the whole idea behind energy work is that our bodies are made of energy. So before we are cells and molecules we are energy, which everything is energy. A desk is energy. A chair is energy. Everything is energy. And the reason that they appear to look different, and it’s not just one big blob, the world isn’t one big blob of energy, is because there are different frequencies. And the way to explain frequency is really like a radio. Radio stations occur at different frequencies, and so let’s say you’re listening to talk radio and that’s at, you know, 99.1, and then you turn the dial to 95.9 and there’s music. You are tuning the radio to a different frequency. Therefore you’re getting different information. And literally that’s how the body works is that when we change our frequency of energy we actually change what we’re experiencing. So even things like different diseases occur at different frequencies in the body. So if you have a very low frequency of a body you might have a breeding ground for cancer. You might have a breeding ground for different diseases, where if you raise your frequency it makes it impossible for a disease to manifest in your body.

So the work I do is a lot around changing people’s frequency, and there’s many, many ways to do it. I do it through conversation. So literally we talk, and I just through the virtue of sharing about your life and talking, I am releasing negative energy from your system. So maybe you know someone who kind of goes through life just in a bad mood. It’s like every time they show up they’re just like, they’re the downer maybe, or they don’t see – or you’ll say isn’t life great, and they’re like life’s not great. You know, I mean they’re just the person that takes even the most positive statements and makes them negative. They are just – their inner resonance, they’re living in a way that’s just at a very low frequency. Even emotions have frequencies, so things like fear and sadness and grief are low-frequency emotions. Things like joy and compassion and happiness and fulfillment are high-frequency emotions. And if you feel just in me saying those, you kind of – like when I’m saying joy and happiness and compassion, like that feels good as I say it. And when I say sadness and grief and shame and guilt, like you go, ugh, it feels like a downer.

So those are just examples of the different spectrum that we can live on. And what’s interesting with the body is the cleaner the food is that goes through the body, the easier it is to raise our frequency. So food is a great tool to raising the energy in your life and really having – it’s funny because people go – people might be thinking like ugh, I don’t even know about this energy stuff, like I can’t understand it. And the truth is we experience it all the time. If you go to a party and there’s 200 people at a party you’re not going to see everyone in that room. You’re not going to talk to everyone in that room. You’re going to walk in that room, and you’re going to look around, and you’re going to go oh, he might be interesting to talk to. We’re going to pull people out with our eye, like oh she looks nice, or he looks nice. That’s energy. You’re just feeling a commonality in your energy with that person. And oftentimes when people leave that party they might say something like, oh I met Bill. He had the greatest vibe. We’ll say that. And literally it’s because we are connecting at an energetic level, meaning Bill and I are at a similar frequency. We’re somewhere around each other’s frequency, so I feel connected to him. I feel like there’s a common bond even before we speak or even before we meet.

And so I give these practical examples because the discussion of energy can sometimes be a scientific discussion. So when I say quantum theory people sometimes just shut down when they hear that. They go oh my god, I don’t know anything about science. Or it can be a very spiritual conversation as well. And for some people that seems really out there and not something that’s easy to talk about. And yet it is what we are. That’s been proven by science is that we are energy. And so in my work I like to make energy accessible to everybody, meaning we don’t have to have a science degree or read a science journal, nor do we need to be super spiritual to utilize this in our life to make our life better, to make our body healthier, to move fear out, which is a low-frequency energy, and be able to move forward with the things that we love in our life in a more powerful way without feeling the limitation or feel like we’re being stopped by that. So it’s a conversation that’s extremely powerful, and I really – even I, some of the text written on frequency is just, you know, I start to read it and I go who’s going to understand this? Nobody’s going to get this. And yet when we can have the examples like going to a party and have the examples like on a radio station, we all understand that.

And so that kind of work is extremely powerful. And when you work at the energetic level different than at the physical level, things can happen very fast. So we have this idea that it might take us a long time to lose weight or heal our body in certain ways. That’s a concept that we have in our mind. And when you work in the energetic field things can move so quickly, like people can in a matter of a couple months completely turn their health around, down to like their blood tests. So I’ve had clients that I’ve worked with for three months where they were on all kinds of medications, and high blood pressure, and prediabetes, and all this kind of stuff, and literally in three months they’ve got the bloodwork that’s perfectly normal across the board. So these things can happen very quickly, and we don’t have to go through those feelings of struggle that often happen in the healing process.

DAN:
Is there techniques that you can do by yourself, or do you need somebody to work with to improve your energy?

SHANA:
That’s a great question. I think I’ve never been asked that, but that’s an interesting thought. I think it would be more if you were at a certain level of consciousness that you would be able to access that and understand it and feel it. It’s kind of like we’re desensitized to feeling energy for the most part. Like the more you work with somebody on it, the more sensitive you get to the sensation of it and to the feeling of it because we’re so often in our society a thinking society. We think our way in and out of things instead of necessarily using our intuition and following our intuition and really, which is a feeling sense, not a thinking sense. And so oftentimes our thinking overrides our feeling where in truth really I think it’s our feeling that is supposed to be leading the decision-making and the thinking supporting the feeling. So I really teach people to reverse those where they start listening to – like if they walk in a room and they don’t feel comfortable, they listen to that. Or if they feel like gosh, you know I’m driving home and I feel like I should make a right even though I normally go left, just listen to it. What the heck? I mean you never know where it’s going to take you. So it’s something we have to tune into. So I think maybe it’s best to get support at the beginning in developing that sensitivity. Once that sensitivity is developed and you’ve kind of opened up to it and tapped into it, which everyone has it. It’s not like some people have it and some people don’t. It’s just some people are more present to it, and other people are less present to it. So I think for most people in the beginning yes, you need some help in kind of tuning in, and then as time goes on and you learn some skills with it, it becomes easier to kind of use it on your own.

DAN:
That’s interesting. So real quick about color and light then. Tell us about that.

Color and Light Therapy and Getting Back in Touch with Nature

SHANA:
There’s just a lot of research on color and light therapy, and we have different reactions. Again, it’s going to trigger different frequencies because light happens, you know the spectrum of light, the red, the blue colors, they’re all at a different frequency. And so those are literally information for the body. So we can open up different channels with different frequencies. And by the way, I really believe that this information is going to become really commonplace as time goes on. People will understand going and getting light therapy and going and getting – going in and their energy and their frequencies. It’s kind of the path of least resistance and the easiest path. And I know some people that live in areas that are dark all the time. Certainly we need the sunlight, and we need light. And people that live in areas where they don’t get that have artificial lights in their home so they – because a lot of people struggle with depression because they don’t have that light.

There is more knowledge about what the sun gives to us than we even realize. It’s so important. I mean we know we get vitamin D from having the sun exposure, but there’s even more to it. We need nature to survive. We need light to survive. It feeds us in a way that nothing else does, and most of us live lives where we’re inside all the time. Or a lot of people don’t want to get skin cancer, so they say stay out of the sun, or put sunblock on. And so we are light deficient in a lot of ways. And so it’s amazing what can happen when people start being exposed to the different color spectrum and start being exposed to light in different ways, the healing that can go on just from that. Literally I say to clients if you can get out in the sunlight and you can drink more water, because most people, about 75% of the population is dehydrated, that’s a game changer, those two things right there alone, even before we talk about food.

DAN:
Yeah, and I think when you walk outside first of all vitamin D, there’s a high percentage that are vitamin D deficient as well. But you walk out into the sun and you know you just have that good feeling where you hear people walk out and they’re like oh the sun feels so good. I mean, I agree we’re supposed to be out there. I also follow earthing where you get out barefooted on the ground, and that’s like as a kid we were always out barefoot running around, but people don’t really go outside too much anymore and get barefoot, which is interesting.

SHANA:
It’s so true. And we really need – there’s a polarity that comes from the earth that we need. So we need our feet to touch the earth, and so much of the illness they think in this day and age really comes from obviously the microbiome, and the problem is that we are too clean. Everybody’s using hand sanitizer, and we’re not playing in the dirt, and we’re not getting those organisms that we need to stay healthy. And so the irony of it is that everyone is trying to stay super clean, and that’s really what’s making us unhealthy is that we are meant to interact with nature and the earth, and we are part of nature. That is the truth of who we are. Before we built buildings and cars and all these things we were grounding every day, all the time, and we were eating off of the earth. And that’s why a lot of it goes back to low-carb and paleo and these things. It really goes back to eating how we were intended to eat, which is as pure and close to nature as possible. And that is the food that the body heals on.

DAN:
Yeah, I mean I don’t think there’s any magic formula with paleo or low-carb. You’re right. You just go to whole food. You’re just going, getting rid of processed food and kind of going back to what we ate. I’m turning 50 this year, and as a kid we just kind of ate meat and potatoes, and we didn’t get – I don’t even remember getting like fast food my first probably 10 years of life or whatever, and so I think it’s pretty simple. You’re just eating fruits and vegetables and whole foods, and I think these days though you have to – it’s a little more tricky because of the quality of the food. I don’t – maybe there was quality issues 35 years ago. I don’t know. But it seems there’s a lot more now with what you’re eating.

SHANA:
Yes, it’s through the roof now. And what people – you know, if you step back and you look at a really like global perspective on health, you have the perfect storm going on for most people, meaning we are eating processed foods. We are eating tons of sugar as a society. We’re eating tons of chemicals, which until about 20 years ago really never even touched our bodies. I mean people do not realize the amount of chemicals that are in the environment today, that we are breathing, that we are eating in food, that we are drinking in water. It’s just inundated us. So we’ve got that going on, and then we have more stress than ever before. People, the fact that technology is beautiful, but the fact that we have so much technology where people can reach us all the time, and we’re expected to respond all the time, it’s really hard for people to get away from that and to go out in nature and kind of shut down their phones and computers. So we have that going on. Then we’ve got all the cellular signals, all the EMFs out there that are going on that have never gone on like this ever in time.

And then we have more trauma and sadness and things that people have gone through, and really we have not done a good job at providing safe spaces for people to experience their emotion and move through it. So we have most people kind of just rolling over the top of their hurts and pains all their life and just saying I’ve got to keep going. I can’t fall apart. I’ve got to put food on the table. I’ve got to go to my job. I’ve got to take care of my kids. I mean whatever it may be, we just kind of keep going. And then all that stuff is brewing under the surface, and it’s affecting how we think. It’s affecting how we feel, how we show up in life, how excited we are or not excited we are about life. And it’s all just creating a negative energy underneath the surface. And people manifest it in different ways. So some people manifest physical disease when it gets to its tipping point.

And everybody’s tipping point is different. So some people, it’s when they’re younger. Some people it’s very much when they’re older. So all kinds of things happen for people. You can manifest a physical disease. You can – some people have nervous breakdowns. Some people just decide I’m going to change my life overnight. I can’t do this anymore. There’s all kinds of these things that are happening for people, and really we’ve got to take a step back and say we’ve got to look at this stuff, and we’ve got to make choices because there’s no other time that we’ve been living where we kind of can’t rely on other people to make sure our food is safe. We can’t rely on other people and just say oh yeah I’ll just eat whatever and expect to be healthy, where back maybe 50, 60 years ago you could kind of just eat whatever. There wasn’t organic and nonorganic. There was just food. And it generally didn’t have a bunch of chemicals in it. And so we now need to be educated consumers, and we need to understand this amazing knowledge that I know that you’re passing along to your audience, so that we can protect our health and protect our bodies. And when I say health I mean mental health, emotional health, physical health, on all levels.

DAN:
We used to have a saying back when I was a kid that the corn – because I grew up in Iowa – and the corn would be knee-high by Fourth of July, and now Fourth of July it’s like 10 feet tall, which it’s just yeah, mean the Roundup and the genetics in all the food, and yeah, it’s really hard to eat healthy. And after a while, though – like I try to eat organic everything – it’s even if I go out and eat something that’s like a piece of meat and some vegetables from a restaurant, I sit and think what is in this food? And that’s like because, you know, they’re not – definitely most restaurants aren’t using sustainable food and all that. So it’s very challenging to eat healthy and to be healthy. I live in a town with a huge ADM factory, and so that’s in the air. It’s just hard. I agree with everything you’re saying. Before – I want to get your method in a second, but just touch real quickly on color therapy.

SHANA:
Yeah, it’s just basically it can be done a lot of different ways. I mean, if you’re familiar with infrared saunas or infrared, which is really a way to detoxify the body, too, so sometimes they do color therapy within that. And it’s really just, you know what I mean, experiencing the different colors. Even color therapy can be done not through light, not through color light, but just literally using color blocks. There’s a lot of different ways color therapy can be done. And sometimes people that are doing energetic work also do a lot of color work as well. So some of the – most of the stuff that I did was within infrared systems, so they were built with different colored light panels, and those colors would elicit different emotional feelings, different , you know, a feeling of calmness, a feeling of excitement. Basically your emotional self would be changing with some of this color therapy that was going on. And so it’s just – it’s, again, it’s another tool in the tool chest. And I think like what I love to share with people is that sometimes we think there’s only one way to do something, there’s only one way to heal a certain disease, or there’s only one way to lose weight, go on a diet. And that’s just not the case at all. There’s so many different healing methods and methodologies, and really powerful stuff that doesn’t have a lot of side effect to it or a lot of downfall to it, but mostly just help the physical body become stronger.

And from my perspective now, before I used to focus on the outside, and now I focus on the inside, how clean is my body inside. And again, it’s not about that we have to live in a box and only eat organic food every day all day long. It’s knowing all the information so that you can pick and choose. The body can detoxify, but you can’t overwhelm it on all levels for years and years and years. And so when you have the right foundation of information, you can go okay, well I’m going to take out all my toxic cleaning products and get those out of the house because that doesn’t make me happy to have toxic cleaning products versus non-toxic. But maybe you want to have the dinners out that might be GMO from time to time. That’s fine. It’s picking and choosing and finding that right balance for you that has you feeling good. And so often I’ve had people come to me, and nothing feels good to them anymore. Maybe they hate their job, they don’t feel fulfilled, they’re not – their body is not healthy, they’re having all kinds of digestive issues. You know they can have all of this or just one of these things going on in their life, and it’s impacting their joy. It’s impacting them feeling good, and they’re afraid of like what is life without this? How do I make changes in my life? How do I move forward? How do I live healthier in the ways that I want to? And that’s where this work is really powerful for people that are in those different places.

DAN:
Yeah, that’s very interesting. So kind of take us through your method. And it’s kind of a unique method, correct?

Shana’s Method

SHANA:
It is. It’s something that needs to be experienced, for one. It’s not something I can just explain from front to end because it’s very individualized, too. So again, it starts with going back throughout your life. So I have people kind of take their life in 10-year chunks. And we talk about different things that went on in their life. And what’s really fascinating is that for a lot of people we’ve almost closed off our memory to certain things that have happened to us maybe in childhood or in our young life, like we haven’t thought about it in years. And I say to people our past holds so much information about our future, and if we can understand the things that we’ve been through and we can process those and understand them in a new way, that totally changes the trajectory of our future. I mean a lot of the reasons why people limit themselves or they feel fear has to do with things that have happened in childhood. Maybe a parent didn’t treat them well, or maybe even a child at school said something to them. I mean we’re very impressionable at those young ages, and we make these decisions about who we are and what’s possible for our life very early on, and then we kind of live out of them for most of our life.

So we really start off with going through the timeline of our life and sharing the best things about it and sharing the hardest things about it, sharing the sadness, the things that were sad, the things that might have been traumatic because all of those, the way I’m looking energetically is that they are all ties to current day. So something that happened when you’re five might be affecting whether you think you can get a promotion at work or whether you feel confident getting a new job. So when we can go through I’m able to see those ties where the child at five is connecting to present day, where the event that happened when you were 10 is connecting to what’s possible in relationship for you. And as we talk about it I can disconnect those. I can help you heal those. And so you can have what you want today.

But all of the answers kind of lie in yesterday and understanding what’s going on in our life. And I’ll give you a quick powerful example of how this works because there’s a lot of like core beliefs that people might have about themselves. So someone might have a belief like I’m not good enough, and that might have happened very early on in their life, and when we feel that way, which we might not even be consciously present to, it might be unconscious that we feel that way, yet it’s showing up in every area of our life. So if I feel like I’m not good enough it’s going to show up in the career I choose. It’s going to show up in the marriage I’m in. It’s going to show up in what’s possible for my life. It’s going to show up on my body. It’s going to show up everywhere. So when people can get to these unconscious decisions that were made and release them, then every single area of their life has a shift in it. So my clients, they might come to me and say I want to lose weight, or I got a diagnosis, and yet a few weeks into working together they have a new relationship, or their relationship is deepened with their current partner, or they’re making more money, or they’ve got a promotion because, again, when you heal at the energetic level like we’re not looking at it like oh this is just relationship or oh this is just the body. It heals at the foundational level every area of your life, and that’s why I feel like it’s really kind of the wave of the future because if we can go and understand everything at the deepest root cause, at the deepest foundational level and have it heal all areas of our life simultaneously, that’s just powerful.

DAN:
So how long do clients typically stay with you? I’m sure it varies quite a bit, but is there a point where you just say well, you’re fixed; it’s time to quit coming to me?

SHANA:
I do – the work is not too – it’s not like talk therapy where we just go for five years or 10 years. It really is a transformational process, and so typically it’s 3 to 6 months that I work with people on a weekly basis, and for some people it moves really quickly just based on their personality, their willingness, a lot of different factors. And for other people it takes more like six months to kind of move through stuff. All of it is perfect. It doesn’t matter how long it takes. Everybody gets to that end result when they get there, and it’s all part of their personal journey. So people will say to me what do we do in session number one, and it’s not really like that because when people come, it’s like they’re going to actually reveal what is the next thing to be healed. So it’s not a traumatic experience. Even if we’re releasing old emotion, which is most people’s biggest fear, like I don’t want to think about that old emotion because I’ll be traumatized by it, or it will be painful and horrible to feel it. And so part of the method is to release the energy of that emotion without re-experiencing what caused the pain. And that’s what people find surprising and exciting about the work that I do because they go wow, if it can be this easy to allow this old stuff, clean out the closet and get this old stuff out, it’s just very empowering. Your life moves forward very quickly, and people are always surprised by that. They’re always saying like gosh, it’s surprising how I just don’t want to eat bad foods anymore, you know what I mean, or foods that like used to harm my body I just really feel like they no longer resonate. So people are just surprised at how quickly and easily, and there’s not this feeling of deprivation going on or fear going on in the process.

DAN:
And then how do you recommend, because you talked about your toolbox of different color therapy, light therapy, how do you assess what that person needs? Do you guys work through it together? Do they trial some of it? Kind of walk us through that.

SHANA:
Yeah, definitely. So I mean I refer people to different practitioners that are within my network for different therapies that aren’t what I offer, and if I feel like it will support the healing journey for them. And so yeah, it’s more an intuitive process like where if I – like if I’ve had a couple clients that really want to heal their bodies to get pregnant and maybe they’ve struggled with that, and so acupuncture is amazing for that. So we’ll work in conjunction between the acupuncturist and myself kind of each doing our gifts and really clearing the path for the person to get their desired results. So it just depends, and oftentimes I say nobody ever has one doctor in their life forever or one healer. I mean the journey is that you’re really going to find different stuff from different people that moves your journey forward. And so I love working in conjunction with other practitioners that are amazing at what they do, and that happens a lot of times.

See More from Shana

DAN:
Yeah, that’s pretty cool. We’re running out of time, but I do want to ask you a couple questions. So you were a guest on What You’re Really Hungry For. Tell us about that a little bit. It says it’s a popular web series.

SHANA:
Yeah, so it’s a podcast and a web series, so they do in-person video interview series, and it’s a lot of different topics, everything in the health and wellness space. But like yourself, having a lot of different people come in with maybe not so well-known modalities and things they do to give people a well-rounded idea of holistic healing. So it’s a fun show, and it was great to be on it.

DAN:
And then you have Be Well Live. That’s your own show, correct?

SHANA:
Yes, yes, I have a live Facebook show, which is really cool. It was a dream of mine for a long time because I really, whenever I’m listening to different interviews, too, I’m always thinking of ideas, and so I wanted to create a platform where people could interact with the guest, which we do. We take questions from the audience, and people are able to put their questions in the chat box and have them answered right there live. So we have everything, all kinds of practitioners and doctors in all different areas. We’ve even had like relationship experts and looking at – we’ll have a couple people coming up that are going to talk about autoimmunity, and yeah, so it’s just really broad topics that have to do with kind of living a healthy, holistic life.

DAN:
I’ve done a few Facebook Lives. I really like that format. It’s just kind of cool to see the questions pop up, and people are hopefully hitting the like button so you can see those fly across the screen, but you like the live format?
SHANA:
Yeah, I really do. It’s really – I mean, there’s kind of an energy to it right before you go live, and the guests have a lot of fun, and I think it’s very fun for them, too, to be able to interact. And a lot of times I’m promoting people’s books and things like that, which is fun because then they can, you know like you put a book out into the world; you don’t always get to answer questions directly to the people that are reading it or are interested in it. So it provides a forum to do that and to be able to – so it’s really cool. So sometimes people have already read the books, and they come on and they ask questions, or they ask questions and that leads them to wanting to get the book and really dive into the information. So it’s fun. I mean I really enjoy it. And I’m always enjoying what I’m hearing and learning from my guests. I mean it’s a really great exchange.

DAN:
Yeah, I’ve learned so much from my guests on the podcast, too, but yeah, the live definitely has a different type of energy to it. And the funny part is the guests are usually a little bit nervous about being live.

SHANA:
Yeah, it’s true.

DAN:
Yeah, it’s kind of funny.

SHANA:
It’s funny. I’ve had a few guests that they’ve waited months and months and months to book, and I’m like hey, do you want to come on? And they’re like, I’m nervous, and I’m like no, I always try to make it really comfortable and fun. And there’s a lot of people that tune in that tune in every week. So we get to know each other. I’ve gotten to know a lot of our guests just through going back and forth. And sometimes they send me private messages and questions, and I always like to ask like who do you guys want to see on the show, and so it’s really fun and interactive, and I get to know people. And it’s on my page at Facebook.com/Shana.Ekedal for anyone that wants to follow along. It’s a good time.

DAN:
Yeah, and they’re also on YouTube, right, because I pulled up – yeah, they’re all on YouTube as well.

SHANA:
Yes, they are. They’re on my YouTube channel as well.

DAN:
Yeah, I was scrolling through them today checking them out. They look pretty cool. I do want to ask you about your book, though. You’re coming out with a book, and tell us about your online event that’s coming up.

SHANA:
Yeah, so the book is really, like I said, because the work I do is sometimes new to people, they haven’t heard about it, or they don’t understand exactly what it is, the book is really just kind of the deeper knowledge about how I do what I do, how I came to understand the human body the way I do, how there’s a lot of like stories of different clients of mine and the results they’ve gotten in the book. And I teach people how to create with their energy, so how to use their energy for the good instead of for the negative. So we want to be using our energy every day to create what we want instead of creating what we don’t want. And it’s the same equation. So we’re either creating good stuff, or we’re creating and re-creating things we don’t want to see in our life. And so I teach people really how to use their energy to focus it towards the positive and move their life forward in a big way. So there’s definitely stuff about the body, but again, energy work goes to that broader spectrum where we really look at relationships. We look at the career we want, how we want to feel in our life throughout the book. And so it’s really cool. It was a fun project. I wrote the book very quickly. The information just kind of poured through me, and people that have had their hands on the book are really loving it. And so I kind of feel like the book has a life of its own already even though it’s not even out yet.

DAN:
Do you have a publication date, or is that still to be determined?

SHANA:
Still to be determined, yeah. We’re doing some final edits right now.

DAN:
That’s cool. And no physics background needed?

SHANA:
None at all, not with my brand at all. And I think – I really think that is my purpose and passion is to make frequency and the conversation of energy something that anyone, even kids, can understand, that it just – because it doesn’t need to be difficult. And so everything that I put out into the world is just really common, everyday language that anybody and everybody can understand. And I really hope that that’s the message that people get is that something that used to be kind of difficult to understand can be so easy and so powerful in their lives.

DAN:
But physicists are welcome.

SHANA:
Physicists are always welcome, of course. But we’re not going to talk in difficult language.

DAN:
Tell me real quickly about your online event coming up.

SHANA:
Yeah, we have an event we’re putting together. We’re not talking about a lot of the details of it because we’re doing something really different than a typical structure, and so we’re still in development of that. And we decided we weren’t going to release it because my team and I came up with something really cool. And so we’re kind of keeping it under wraps while we’re in development. But yes, that will launch as well, and we’re excited about it. I think with everything that I do I’m always wanting to really be on the edge of creating new stuff. And stuff that’s fresh and exciting and cutting edge is really where I find myself, and so everything, the way I wrote my book and the content of the book, you know people say gosh this is so different. It’s such a different take, and it’s so powerful. And so with everything that I will turn out for anybody that’s following my work, it’s always going to have that edge to it. That’s what’s exciting to me. I feel like that’s really part of my purpose.

DAN:
Yeah, that’s very cool. So final tips to the listeners, if they’re feeling down, if they’re not feeling good, what are a few tips you have for them to start becoming more healthy, to start feeling better, to feel more positive?

How to Start Feeling Better Today

SHANA:
Yeah, the more information you can take in, like watching your podcast and listening to this stuff, it really does start to like – you start to embody it. You start to understand it more. So we are blessed that we live in a time where we have so much information accessible to us through the internet and stuff. And so I just say fill your mind with good information and good stuff. If you look at the time that you’re awake every day, how much negativity are you taking in, and how much positivity are you taking in? For a lot of people when I’m working with them, they take a lot of the negativity off their Facebook feed, or they unfollow anything that’s really kind of dark or negative. And maybe they watch less of violence and things like that just while we’re changing our energy because we want to start resonating with positivity.

We want to start resonating with the good stuff. And so we really just want to look over our life and say how much kind of negativity am I interacting with because we don’t realize it. You might think, oh it’s just on my Facebook feed, but every day you’re absorbing that. It’s energy that’s coming at you, and you’re taking it in. And if you start really reading books that are inspiring and listening to podcasts that teach you new information about your health and wellness and taking that positive energy in, it will shift your life for the positive. Because your parents would say to you like what you hang around you become, and it’s true because we really resonate with the types of people and the types of information that we are around. We just kind of start to vibe with it, and we start to embody it, too. And so if you’re hanging around very negative people or people are saying negative stuff to you all the time, it’s very hard to feel good in that environment. So we can – I call it protect your energy. We can protect our energy by putting ourselves around what we want to embody, what we want to become in our life.

DAN:
Yeah, that’s such a good tip. I haven’t watched the news – I actually watched the news tonight for the first time in I don’t even know. I quit watching the news a couple years ago because it’s just bad news, every bit of it. So I agree, and if you get in a circle of negative people, not only is it negative towards you, you end up becoming part of that negativity, and it’s very easy to just start saying negative things as well. So I agree with that tip. You have to just kind of sensor the negativity out of your every day.

SHANA:
It’s so important. It really can be the access point to living a whole different life and feeling really positive is just getting – you know, what you can control, kind of minimizing that and adding in some more positive stuff.

DAN:
This has been a great discussion. We are definitely out of time, so tell us how we can get a hold of you if somebody wants to work with you, access your information or get on the mailing list so that they can find out about your book and your online event.

SHANA:
Absolutely. My website is my name, which is shanaekedal.com. It’s shanaekedal.com, and there is right on the homepage there is a place to subscribe, and you get lots of good recipes. I also have a second recipe book, which I just came out with, and it’s called Crave: No-Guilt Junk Food Recipes. So it’s all of our favorite foods that we crave, the chocolate, the potato chips, the ice cream, you know everything under the sun, even different burgers and pastas and things like that, and you can get that recipe book free at craverecipebook.com. I love that gift. And people – I’m getting rave reviews and tons of emails about it. For people that feel called to maybe look into one-on-one coaching with me there is a section on my website under services that says private coaching. So you can fill out that form there and find out more about that.

DAN:
That’s awesome. And we will link everything in the show notes so they can find your book, and the book sounds great. How can you eat junk food in a healthy way? That’s a bestseller right there for sure.

SHANA:
Yeah, right? I know. There’s nobody that doesn’t like that. Everyone is [loving 0:49:52.6] that book.

DAN:
The only unhappy people are Pringles and Snickers right now because you found a way. Well, Shana, it has been a pleasure having you on the show today and a very interesting topic. And I know the listeners are going to reach out and find out more about it because it sounds like a great method to improve your overall wellness.

SHANA:
Yeah, thank you so much. It’s been such a pleasure to be here with you today. I appreciate it.

DAN:
And you are out in sunny California. That is correct, right?

SHANA:
I am. I am in Laguna Niguel, California.

DAN:
So not only are you eating healthy junk food, but you’re in California enjoying the sun.

SHANA:
I am. It’s true. We’re lucky here.

DAN:
That’s awesome. Thank you, Shana, for being on the show. Good luck with everything, and congratulations on your book and your online event coming up.

SHANA:
Thank you so much.

DAN:
Thank you.
